Bricket Wood wins the Hertfordshire Village Of The Year Competition 2004
for the ‘Young People Category’

Bricket Wood was awarded a CPRE COMMENDATION CERTIFICATE in the YOUNG PEOPLE CATEGORY at an awards ceremony in Hertford County Hall on July 1st. Sixteen villages entered this year, nine won an award and the overall winner for Hertfordshire was Hunsdon

The year passed in a flash, and once again on behalf of the BWRA I submitted our entry to the CPRE -The Hertfordshire Society competition for Village of the Year . As before, I entered for all five categories, Environment, Business, Young People, Older People and Community Life. This time I also put forward our website for consideration. The application form consisted of eight pages of questions to which I gave detailed answers covering each of the categories. Answers to this questionnaire provide the initial basis for selection by the judges prior to their round of village visits.

We were visited by three judges on June 18th at the Parish Centre where some forty villagers were assembled. With contributions from many sources, additive to my own, I was able to put together a comprehensive display of photographs, posters and other material covering the many and varied activities in the village. In addition, The Bricket Wood Society mounted their own very informative display. Subsequently, with their kind permission, the displays were mounted in the lobby of St Luke's Church for the following week. Hopefully many of you were able to see them.

Prior to the meeting I took the judges to see the children in the Tots Day Nursery at the Parish Centre and afterwards to Hanstead Wood, the HSBC Community Woodland site.

Speakers during the morning were Mike Carter (BWRA and the Community), Ann Morton (Environment and Hanstead Wood), Mabel Bush (Senior Citizens Luncheon Club), Julie Plunkett (Youth Activities) and David Bishop (A Life in Bricket Wood). Cllr Wendy Berriman gave a vote of thanks to the judges at the end. A full list of those attending is shown below. I was particularly delighted that so many of the village youngsters were able to be present, resplendent as they were in school , scout, guide or brownie outfits. Their appearance and behaviour were a credit to their schools, the village and themselves. I have no doubt that they, together with Julie's presentation accounted for our success.

My thanks go to the speakers, to all present and all who provided display material, to the WI and Copper Beech Women's Club for delicious cakes, to Margaret and Val for serving them, to Satya Norris for magnificent floral displays, to St Luke's Church, Liz Arendt (Hearing Dogs) and CMS for loan of display panels, to the Heads of schools for granting time off for the youngsters and to their "minders", to the girls in the Parish Office for administrative help, to St Stephen Parish Council for their support and for use of the facility, and to John Drinkwater for stalwart help (you may remember that he got out of it last year by falling off a ladder --- somewhat extreme!!!).

We have a lot to be proud of in Bricket Wood and ultimate success is not beyond our grasp. We need fresh input and ideas for the future. If you are willing to help with the challenge please contact any member of the Residents Association Management Committee.
